Intensive Organic Farming?

Wal-Mart has plans to start selling organic produce in it’s stores, making organic available to the masses. Here an NYTimes article looking at the good and the bad (ok well maybe more of the bad than the good):

I don’t know if I agree with the article about organic food being some kind of economic status indicator, but then I live in a mostly-rural province where there are a lot of home gardens and farm markets.

I think that bottom-line is, it will be a good step in the right direction. Yes, they will still probably grow crops based on intensive monoculture. Yes, our organic chickens and cows may never see sunlight. That’s why it’s a step, but not a solution. The fewer hormones and pesticides there are going into our food supply, the better off the people and the planet will fare.
